It must be spring!

Blossoms on trees, warmth in the breeze, love in the air, delights everywhere. Spring is always an invigorating time of year and this year it started earlier than ever.

There was no better way to kick off the season of new beginnings than with the wedding of Kaity and Courtney. They tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony on 16th August. CKC was there to serenade the gathering with two songs, and the married couple of barely 5 minutes stepped back into the chorus for the performances.

We also welcomed Lea Beverley in August for an evening of coaching. Lea is an international expression judge and Sweet Adelines International coach, based in Seattle.

‘All the colours of the rainbow’ at Fremantle 2024

‘It was like all the colours of the rainbow had come together in the most shimmering, electrifying sound’. That was how one audience member described our rendition of ‘Don’t rain on my parade’ at the close of this year’s Sweet Adelines Australia competition.

And why wouldn’t we have sung this big, fabulous song with all the exuberance and attitude of Barbara Streisand as she steams across New York Harbour with total conviction in her purpose? That was us on Saturday night in the Parade of Champions. We came – we sang – we competed. And we rocked after our second place in the AA division, and second overall position in Australia!

Countdown to Freo – all systems are go!

Fremantle will be humming in four part harmony when choruses and quartets arrive from all over the country next month. The 2024 Sweet Adelines Australia annual convention will be held from 16-20 May at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle, and Circular Keys Chorus will be bringing the verve and vibrancy of the east coast’s busiest port with them to this iconic west coast port!

We’ve been practising two fabulous songs over the last year in preparation for the event, and are very pleased with our hard work and progress. In addition to Vicki Dwyer’s weekly direction, we’ve had an amazing weekend workshop with Bec Hewitt, and are very much looking forward to a pre-convention coaching session with Di Huber, director of River Blenders Chorus, Missouri, USA.

It’s a new dawn!

It's a new dawn. It's a new day. There'll be new songs, to take our breath away. And we're feelin' ... GOOD!

2024, here we come. Welcome back to all our intrepid ladies who helped make 2023 such a buzz. We're looking forward to another big year - with exhilarating stage recitals, the national competition in Fremantle (WA) and the routine activities of meeting together each week, having the best time, and reaching for the stars as we hone our performance techniques. In addition to our regular weekly rehearsals led by master director Vicki Dwyer, we will have several weekend workshops with specialist national and international coaches.

End of year wrap up

As the end of year approaches Circular Keys Chorus has been kept busy with lots of activities. We’ve been practicing our repertoire of Christmas songs for the upcoming carolling performances between now and the end of the year.

In mid November we teamed up with Sydney Harmony Men’s Chorus to stage a show called ‘Broadway meets Pop’ at Hornsby RSL Club. Our audience numbered several hundred appreciative people, and we treated them to an evening of a capella singing that traversed the musical spectrum, from 1940s Broadway classics through to the latest techno-funk pop.

Viva Bris-Vegas!

The Brisbane Convention Centre was pumping on Saturday night, 6th May, and there was plenty to celebrate. The awards for the Sweet Adelines Southern Cross Region 2023 competition had just been announced, and Circular Keys Chorus received its highest ever competition score – 622 points – placing it second overall. The winner was Endeavour Harmony, with a score of 649 points.

After months of preparation, rehearsing and planning, it was time for everyone to bling up, let their hair down and party hard. One CKC member’s Elvis-inspired gyrations were so exuberant that she managed to break both wrists on the dance floor and ‘leave the building’ in the company of two ambulance officers.

We’re counting down the days

It’s just a few sleeps to go until the Sweet Adelines Southern Cross Region competition begins – starting on Thursday, 4th May, and running until Sunday, 7th May.

Over four days at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, the best female barbershop choruses and quartets from around Australia will go head to head as they vie for a place in this annual flagship event.
